Maison Margiela Replica Up At Dawn Review

If you’re a rose fragrance lover but struggle with anything too powdery, sweet or overpowering, I have a feeling this could be one for you. Maison Margiela Replica Up At Dawn Eau de Toilette is a beautifully soft, green take on rose that feels incredibly natural and atmospheric. Here’s what you need to know.

This fragrance is part of the Replica collection from Maison Margiela, a line designed to capture moments and memories through scent.

Up At Dawn is inspired by that quiet, early morning feeling when everything is still cool, slightly misty, and covered in dew. It centres around rose, but with a fresh green twist and a soft, earthy base that makes it feel modern, light and very wearable.

The Notes

On first spray, it feels instantly fresh, cool and slightly “wet”. There’s a dewy quality to it that genuinely smells like rose bushes covered in morning dew before the sun has properly risen.

It really reminded me of Stella by Stella McCartney Eau de Parfum. It has that same soft, feminine rose, but this feels like a more modern, grounded interpretation with its hit of earthiness. The rose is still delicate and romantic, but there’s an added hint of greenness and earth that gives it a much more natural feel.

You do get a touch of pink pepper at the start. It adds a tiny bit of sparkle, but it’s very subtle and disappears quite quickly.

How It Wears

What really stands out is just how realistic this fragrance is. It’s not about lush, velvety petals. I think this is about the entire rose bush. The green sharp freshness of the stem comes through and makes this feel quite unique.

As it develops, the earthy notes become more noticeable. It’s not heavy or muddy but more of a clean, mossy, slightly damp earthiness that sits under the rose.

The dry down is softly mossy and earthy, but still delicately floral. It wears quite close to the skin and feels very intimate. On me, the longevity isn’t amazing though.

The Vibe

This is a really evocative scent. It transports you to an English countryside garden in the early morning, and it has a real nostalgic feel. It feels feminine but not sweet and the whole composition is very delicate and understated. It gives me strong Downton Abbey energy!

That said, for me personally, this is where it becomes more of an appreciation than a full-on love.

I tend to gravitate towards deeper, darker, more intense rose fragrances. I love the kind that feel a bit more “serious” and statement-making, like Matiere Premiere Radical Rose Eau de Parfum or Tom Ford Rose Prick Eau de Parfum.

Those richer, more powerful roses give me a real sense of confidence. They feel bold, a bit more “heavyweight”, and like they properly announce themselves.

In comparison, this feels much lighter, prettier and more delicate. It’s effortlessly elegant, but it doesn’t quite give me that same sense of presence or impact.

My Overall Thoughts

I think this is such a pretty, wearable take on rose. Maison Margiela Replica Up At Dawn Eau de Toilette is fresh, dewy and softly earthy, with a really elegant, natural feel that makes it stand out from more traditional floral fragrances.

For me, it leans a little too light and delicate for everyday wear, simply because I tend to prefer something with more depth and intensity. However, if you love soft, realistic florals or you’re looking for a rose that feels fresh, green and quietly romantic, this is absolutely one to try.

It’s not loud or attention-seeking, just a very pretty, wearable take on rose.

If you’re looking for something more beachy for summer, that’s still subtle and in the skin scent arena, you might want to check out my Glossier You Soie Eau de Parfum Review and also my DedCool Mineral Milk Eau de Parfum Review.
